What's The Difference Between CAT5e and CAT6 Cable

CAT5e is more than suitable for the vast majority of installs, but CAT6 has a few advantages on larger installs, especially modern CAT6 as it no longer has the flexibility issues that it had at it's original release back in 2002 when it was first introducted  by the Telecommunications Industry Association. It is comprised of a twisted pairs of copper cable, typically ending in 8P8C modular connectors. The CAT6 is used for ethernet and other networks. It offers high speeds and reduced crosstalk compared to its predecessors. The Category 6 cable is backwards compatible with the generations of ethernet cable that immediately preceded it: CAT5 and CAT5e.

CAT6 Compared to CAT5 and CAT5e

Compared to the CAT5 and CAT5e ethernet cables, the CAT6 cable offers dramatically higher speeds and a more stable, uninterrupted connection.

The original CAT5 cable can handle up to 100Mbps and has a bandwidth of 100MHz. CAT5 was made obsolete by CAT5e, which can handle significantly higher speeds - up to 10X faster - and can carry signals across greater distances without interruption. With the shift towards Gigabit Ethernet, CAT5e became the common choice for most consumers, as it can handle the higher speeds and is affordably priced.

In comparison to the CAT5 range, CAT6 cables can handle up to 10 gigabits of data over a short distance - approximately 50 metres per cable - and boasts a bandwidth of 250MHz. It is for this reason that CAT6 cables are normally used as the backbone of a network, while CAT5e cables run to individual workstations. However, as 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds become more common, users will be required to upgrade from their CAT5e cables to CAT6 CCTV Cable in order to take advantage of the higher speeds available. Another advantage of the CAT6 cable is reduced crosstalk issues thanks to more precise design and manufacturing, which makes CAT6 a superior quality cable compared to CAT5 and CAT5e.

Like all previous ethernet cables, the CAT6 cable ends with an RJ-45 connector. At this point, there is no indication that future generations of ethernet cables will use anything different. Since there is no outward difference between generations of ethernet cables, CAT6 cables can be identified by text that is printed on the insulation sheath.

CAT6 For Commercial Use

For home users, a CAT5e cable should be sufficient for all your networking needs. However, if you’re setting up a commercial network CAT6 cabling is a must. It is faster, more efficient, and will result is less network downtime due to its superior quality.

Future-proof your network with our VueNet Cat6 ethernet cable, and enjoy the security offered by our 25 year warranty.
